New dark comedy/Dramatic monologue: "What My Fangs Are For" by Tara Meddaugh

My new monologue, What My Fangs Are For, is the story of a werewolf child telling his mom about his first squirrel kill; it’s darkly humorous, a bit creepy, a bit dramatic. But…it’s also the story of a boy discovering a new identity, trying to make his mother proud, then worrying, with horror, that his new identity may drive her to not love him anymore.

Maybe the whole “eating a raw squirrel” part is not so relatable, but Sammy is not the only child (or adult) to have to reveal a part of their identity which they worry a loved one may not accept.

The monologue, What My Fangs Are For, comes from my new dark comedy 10-minute play, When Marshmallows Burn. In the play, Sammy and his mother, Melissa, discover his werewolf transformation for the first time, and they both need to learn to deal with their new relationship—killings and all. What My Fangs Are For is a 1-minute dark comedy/drama/thriller. It is appropriate for a male or female actor (the role is gender neutral/flexible casting). While the character, Sammy, is a child, the role may be played by a child, teenager or young adult.

SAMMY

I ran in the woods, then crouched down and was really quiet. After just a couple of seconds, I saw a squirrel—because, Mom, now I can see in the dark better than normal! So then, I jumped up, super fast, and ran to the squirrel, super super fast! And I put my mouth on the squirrel’s body and chomped down and just started chewing! The fur and bones didn’t even bother me! I guess that’s what my fangs are for. I think I ate most of in, like, 5 bites. That’s good, right? I always thought I was slower than most kids, but now, I might be faster than anyone!

Mom?

You’re proud of me, right?

Do you want me to get you a squirrel now? END OF EXCERPT
